A Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is a specialized background check used in Canada to screen individuals who work or volunteer with vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, or persons with disabilities. It ensures the safety and protection of those who may be at higher risk of harm or exploitation.

Purpose of a Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Social workers and counselors

  • Volunteers in community programs or youth organizations

  • Employees in nursing homes or long-term care facilities

  • Coaches, mentors, and activity leaders working with minors

What is Included in a VSC?

  • Criminal Record Check – Verifies criminal history from the national database

  • Police Information Check – Reviews local police records, including non-conviction information (where allowed)

  • Sexual Offence Registry Search – Ensures the applicant has no record of sexual crimes, especially involving minors

  • Pardoned Sexual Offences – Includes a search for individuals with record suspensions for sexual crimes
